Set up the survey on JotForm

  1. Create your survey on JotForm with your research study questions and branching logic. If your study requires screening, you will be able to create a screener survey on the Respondent project setup step below. If you need assistance with JotForm, refer to their support.

  2. If you'd like to track and map individual responses in the survey results to participants, use the JotForm form builder to add a 'short text' form element to request a participant to enter their 'Participant ID', with the following question:

“Please enter your Respondent Participant ID”.

You could also make this a required field in your survey, if it is essential for your research purposes. Participants you find on Respondent will be able to copy their Participant ID from their participant account dashboards. As a researcher, the project dashboard will display IDs of participants who have completed your JotForm survey.

  3. Save your form and copy the URL to collect responses to your JotForm survey. We will return to your survey shortly, now let us set up your project in Respondent.

Set up your project on Respondent to find survey participants

  1. Select ‘Survey’ or ‘Unmoderated Task’ as the methodology while setting up your project to recruit high quality participants. Refer to this guide on setting up a project on Respondent, if you new to the platform.

  2. Paste the copied JotForm URL in the ‘Link to task’ field of your project

  3. Copy the automatically generated Completion Confirmation URL to your clipboard and add any special instructions you may want to pass on to your participants.

4. Proceed with your audience details and screener questions on Respondent and publish your project.

Send participants to Respondent upon completion of survey

  1. Return to the JotForm editor and select 'SETTINGS' in the top menu, and select 'Thank You Page'.

  2. (Recommended) Select 'Redirect to an external link after submission' and enter the completion URL for your Respondent project in the text box.

  3. You could also use the "Show a Thank You Page after submission' option and customize the page with a clickable link to the completion URL. To do this, select the 'Show a thank you page after submission' option and add the following message using the editor:

'Important: Please click HERE<insert completion URL as the link> to speed up incentive processing by recording your participation on Respondent. If you are not signed in to your Respondent account, please sign in to record your attendance in the Respondent platform.'

If you are using the latter option, your screen will look as follows:

Invite participants from Respondent to your JotForm survey

  1. Review and invite high quality participants who have applied to your project and are qualified according to your screener questions

Track completes in your Respondent project dashboard and pay

  1. As invited participants complete your survey and click on the completion URL, you can review their status on your Project Dashboard, under the Completes Tab.

  2. You can select participants in bulk and pay them, with no need for individual reconciliation of responses.

  3. Use the Participant IDs on the completes tab to map individual participants to their respective survey results, and use the messaging feature to clear up any inconsistencies or follow-ups.

Troubleshooting JotForm + Respondent integration

The Completes tab on the project dashboard displays that a participant has taken the survey, but I do not see their response on JotForm.

  1. When participants enter incorrect Participant IDs, this can occur. Please use the timestamp of the participant response in JotForm vs. the alert from Respondent or look for similar Participant IDs to the one displayed in the Project Dashboard > Completes tab

  2. If the above step doesn't help you track a response down, you can always message a participant and ask them for additional details that may help track down their survey response.
