Tell the AI what you want to research, and it will draft your project title, goals, targeting, and screener so you can focus on refining rather than building from scratch.
Here's what's included:
Prompt-to-project — Type what you want to learn and get a full draft in seconds.
Smart screener generation — AI creates qualified/disqualified screener questions based on your research goals.
Targeting built in — Demographics, job profiles, and audience criteria are set automatically.
Edit anything, anytime — Refine AI suggestions directly in the canvas, or keep chatting to adjust.
Start from scratch — Prefer full manual control? Skip the guided setup entirely.
Beta Notice: This experience is in beta — rough edges are expected. Your feedback helps us improve it. All AI-generated content is fully editable, so treat it as a starting draft, not a final product.
Who Is This For?
AI-powered setup is designed for researchers who want to get a project up and running quickly — whether you're new to Respondent or a returning researcher launching your next study.
Use an AI-powered setup when you:
Want a fast starting point and are happy to refine from there
Have a clear research goal, but don't want to configure every field manually
We are setting up a common study type (interviews, surveys, usability tests)
Use "Start from scratch" when you:
Have very specific, non-standard project requirements
Want full manual control over every field from the start
Are replicating an existing project with exact settings
Tip: You can choose "Start from scratch" at any time to skip the guided AI setup entirely.
How It Works
Step 1: Describe Your Research Goal
When you create a new project, you'll see a prompt at the bottom of the screen:
"Describe your research goal..."
Type a natural-language description of what you're researching. Be as specific as you can; the more detail you give, the better the AI draft will be.
Good example: "I want to understand how construction professionals learn new skills on the job — specifically foremen and site managers with 5+ years of experience in commercial construction."
Describe your research goal in a populated field.
Step 2: Chat with AI to Shape Your Project
After you submit your prompt, the AI won't just generate a draft in one shot — it will have a conversation with you to get the details right.
The AI may ask follow-up questions about:
Audience targeting — Who exactly do you want to reach? What job titles, seniority levels, and company sizes?
Demographics — Age range, gender, location, or other criteria.
Recruitment scope — How many participants, which countries, and any specific filters?
The AI will use your responses to configure targeting, set audience criteria, and draft the project details. It will also explain what it sets up and why, so you can see the reasoning behind each choice.
AI chat asking follow-up questions
Once targeting is set, the AI will offer to generate screener questions based on everything you've discussed. Click the button to have it draft your screener automatically.
You'll then see the following sections populate on the canvas:
Project Goals — A summary of your research objectives based on your conversation. This is optional.
External Details — The project title and description that participants will see when they browse available studies.
Project Type — The suggested methodology (e.g., Video call, Online task, Survey).
Audience — The target audience demographics and criteria, configured from your chat.
Screener Questions — Draft screening questions with qualifying and disqualifying answer options, generated from your research goals and targeting. You can track your progress using the Progress checklist in the top-right corner:

Step 3: Edit and Refine
Everything the AI generates is fully editable. You have two ways to make changes:
Edit directly in the canvas — Click into any field (project goals, external details, screener questions, targeting criteria) and edit the text, options, or settings directly.
Keep chatting to adjust — Use the prompt input at the bottom of the screen to give the AI follow-up instructions. For example: "Make the screener shorter," or "Add a question about years of experience," or "Change the target audience to include senior managers only." The AI will update the draft based on your instructions.
Specific things you can edit:
Project goals and details — Rewrite or adjust the research objectives and participant-facing description to match your exact needs.
Project type — Change the methodology if the AI's suggestion doesn't fit. For example, switch from "Video call" to "Online task" if you're running an unmoderated study.
Audience — Adjust targeting criteria, demographics, job profiles, and any filters to narrow or broaden your participant pool.
Screener questions — Edit question text, add or remove answer options, change which answers qualify or disqualify, reorder questions, and add new ones.
Tip: Click Preview (top-right) at any time to see how the screener will appear to participants.

Step 4: Preview and Launch
Once you're satisfied with your project setup:
Click Preview to review the full project as participants will see it.
Review the Progress checklist to make sure all sections are complete.
Click Proceed to Launch in the top-right corner.

Tips for Better AI Output
Be specific in your prompt. Include the role, industry, experience level, and what you're trying to learn. The AI uses your prompt to generate everything. More context means a better first draft.
Iterate with follow-up prompts. You don't have to get it right in one shot. Keep chatting with the AI to refine the draft, ask it to adjust targeting, add screener questions, or change the project type.
Edit directly when it's faster. For small tweaks (fixing a typo, removing one answer option), just click into the canvas and edit. For bigger changes (rethinking the audience), chatting is faster.
Edit aggressively. The AI gives you a starting point, not a finished product. Always review screener questions for accuracy and relevance to your specific study.
Preview the screener. What makes sense to you as a researcher might read differently to a participant. Use Preview to check clarity and flow.
Troubleshooting
The AI generated something irrelevant or off-topic. Try being more specific in your follow-up messages — correct the AI by telling it exactly what's wrong and what you want instead. For example: "No, I want to focus on commercial construction, not residential." If the results are still off after a few rounds, you can choose Start from scratch and build manually
The screener questions don't match what I need. Screener questions are a starting point. Edit the question text, adjust the qualifying/disqualifying answers, delete questions that don't apply, and add your own. You have full control.
The AI didn't populate all sections. The AI builds your project through a conversation. Some sections (like Audience or Screener Questions) won't populate until you've answered the AI's follow-up questions. Keep chatting to move through the steps, or fill in the remaining sections manually in the canvas.
I want to start over completely. Choose Start from scratch to skip the AI-guided setup and build your project manually from an empty canvas. [[Confirm: Where does this option appear — in the canvas, or during project creation?]]
The AI is slow or not responding. This can happen during high-traffic periods. Wait a moment and try again. If the issue persists, you can always fill in the fields manually and skip the AI step.
Can I switch between an AI-powered setup and a manual setup mid-project? Yes. You can edit any field directly in the canvas at any time, and you can choose "Start from scratch" to skip the AI entirely. The AI and manual editing work together to use whichever approach fits the moment.
